Day trips from Istanbul

Looking for unique things to do in Istanbul? A day trip to Anadolu Kavağı is a fantastic option. This small fishing village on the Bosphorus Strait is off the main tourist trail and makes for one of the best day trips from Istanbul.

Istanbul in Türkiye is one of my favourite cities in the world. I love the hustle and bustle, and there is always so much to see and do. But, if you’re looking for something unique to do in Istanbul that allows you to escape the crowds, a day trip to Anadolu Kavağı is the answer. This day trip allows you to visit a small Turkish village, explore ancient ruins, capture stunning views, and take an unforgettable cruise along the Bosphorus. In my opinion, this is one of the best day trips from Istanbul.

This blog post will provide you with tips and information for planning your day trip to Anadolu Kavağı. We will cover why you should visit Anadolu Kavağı, how to get there, and what to do when you arrive. Let’s get started…

All you need to know about Anadolu Kavağı

As you might already be aware, the city of Istanbul is situated across two continents – Asia and Europe. Separated by the Bosphorus Strait, the Asian side of Istanbul (Anatolia) is to the east of the Strait, and the European side is to the west. The Bosphorus Strait is also one of the busiest shipping channels in the world, connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara.

Anadolu Kavağı (pronounced Ana-doh-lu Ka-vai) is located at the very northern end of the Bosphorus Strait. It sits on the Anatolian side, right near the entrance to the Black Sea (Google Maps link here). Directly opposite Anadolu Kavağı, on the other side of the Bosphorus, is Rumeli Kavağı. Given their location, these two villages historically controlled all shipping activity to and from the Black Sea.

Why you should visit Anadolu Kavağı

Anadolu Kavağı really is the perfect escape from the crowds and pace of the city. This quaint fishing village is located on the Bosphorus Strait and sits right on the water’s edge. As soon as you arrive in the town via ferry, you’ll immediately be blown away by how picturesque it is.

Overall, Anadolu Kavağı has something for everyone. For history lovers, there are ancient ruins to explore. For food lovers, there are fantastic seafood restaurants and cafes to try, as well as other Turkish cuisine. For budding photographers, there is no shortage of picturesque photo opportunities. And for those who like to explore ‘off the beaten path destinations’, you’ll appreciate all that Anadolu Kavağı has to offer.

Finally, what makes this one of the best day trips from Istanbul, is the ferry ride. A Bosphorus Cruise is one of the most popular things to do in Istanbul. The advantage of this day trip is that the ferry will take you much further up the Bosphorus than the standard cruises. This will allow you to see more of the city skyline, bridges, and waterfront towns. You also might be lucky enough to spot some dolphins along the way, too!

Now that we’ve discussed reasons to visit Anadolu Kavağı, let’s look at some of the must-do things when you’re there.

Things to do in Anadolu Kavağı

Visit Yoros Castle

A visit to Yoros Castle (Yoros Kalesi) is my number one recommendation when visiting Anadolu Kavağı. I will first say, it’s quite a steep walk to get to the castle, and it takes about 20 minutes. But, I can assure you, it’s well worth it!

Yoros Castle dates back to the 13th century and was captured by many cultural groups over the years, including the Ottomans. Rumeli Kavağı, on the other side of the Bosphorus Strait, has a similar castle. These two castles were considered important viewing points and served as watchtowers. Together, they controlled shipping access between the Black Sea and the Bosphorus Strait.

Excavations of the castle only occurred recently, in the early 2010s. When you visit, you can walk inside and around the castle, and there is quite a lot to see. And the good news is, entry is free!

HOT TIP – Usually, the ferry timetables allow you to spend about 2.5 – 3.0 hours in Anadolu Kavağı. This isn’t a lot of time, so I would recommend heading up to Yoros Castle as soon as you arrive. This ensures that you aren’t at risk of missing the return ferry back to Istanbul. This will also allow you to be flexible in choosing how long you spend at the castle.

Take in the Stunning Views

If you make your way up to Yoros Castle, you will be treated to some incredible views. Looking to the south, you’ll see the length of the Bosphorus Strait towards Istanbul. To the North, you’ll see the entrance to the Black Sea, and the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, known as the ‘Third Bosphorus Bridge’. Exploring the castle ruins is fantastic, but honestly, I would suggest coming up here for the views alone.

When I was visited in May, the weather was sunny and clear, and there were maybe only 50 people there. The site itself is huge, so it does not feel crowded at all. There were also people having a picnic while taking in the views. It’s also a great spot to watch the many ships navigate their way from the Bosphorus to the Black Sea, and vice versa. Next time I visit, I’ll be taking a blanket and a packed lunch to spend as much time there as possible.

HOT TIP – There are some cafes near the top that you have to walk through to get to Yoros Castle. These cafes have an incredible view and a slightly different vantage point compared to the castle. However, I have heard these cafes are quite expensive and not as good as the restaurants in the village – you’re paying for the view. But if you’re willing, a cold drink or Turkish tea at one of these cafes would make for a lovely stop.

Explore the Village

The village of Anadolu Kavağı is situated right on the water and is picturesque in its own right. Make sure you take in the waterfront views and take wander around the town. You’ll find several boutique shops, restaurants and cafes. Anadolu Kavağı is known for it’s seafood so you’ll find a lot of seafood restaurants, some right on the waters edge. You’ll also find traditional Turkish restaurants, and a lot of icecream and sweets shops.

Although Anadolu Kavağı is not as popular a tourist hotspot as other places in Istanbul, it is still catered to tourists. You will find some souvenir shops, and most of the restaurants are aimed at tourists. Therefore, it’s good to do some research beforehand.

I don’t have any specific restaurant recommendations, but I usually check out Google Reviews. I’m also usually guided by how many people are eating there. You can’t really go too far wrong; you’ll just need to adjust to your suit budget. Obviously, those restaurants right on the waterfront are likely to be more expensive.

The Anadolu Kavağı ferry terminal is conveniently located right in the middle of the village – you can’t miss it. The shops and restaurants are all close by. If you choose to explore the village after visiting Yoros Castle, you’ll be in the perfect location to ensure you don’t miss the return ferry.

How to get to Anadolu Kavağı

It takes approximately 2.0 hours one way on the ferry to get from Istanbul city centre to Anadolu Kavaği. This means it’s about a 3.5 – 4.0 hour round trip on the ferry alone, which makes it a full day out.

There are a couple of ferry options to Anadolu Kavaği, which I’ve outlined below. You can also find all of the Istanbul ferry timetables here.

Departing from Eminönü (European Side of the Istanbul)

Eminönü is perhaps the most popular place to depart for Anadolu Kavağı. Eminönü is located on the European side of Istanbul, which is the side where most people stay. The ferry terminal is also located near major attractions, such as the Spice Bazaar, so it’s very easy to get to.

From the Eminönü ferry terminal, you can take the ‘Long Bosphorus Tour‘. I have listed the current times below, which are correct as of January 2026*. However, I would recommend checking the ferry company website for any updated times before you go (link here)

  • Departure Time Eminönü: 10:35am
  • Arrival Time Anadolu Kavağı: 12:25pm.
  • STOP OVER Time: 2 hours 35 minutes
  • Departure Anadolu Kavağı: 3:00pm
  • Arrival Time Eminönü: 4:40pm

These departure times will allow you approximately 2.5 hours to explore Anadolu Kavağı.

Cost for return trip: ₺640* for foreign visitors (approximately €12 per person).

This tour is aimed at tourists, so it’s double the price that the locals pay. I’ve put a cheaper option below that uses the local ferry lines and departs from Üsküdar

Departing from Üsküdar (Asian [Anatolian] Side of the Istanbul)

As mentioned above, most people stay on the European side of the city when they visit Istanbul. But, if you’re willing to jump on a quick, local ferry over to Üsküdar, you can get the trip to Anadolu Kavağı much cheaper.

I’ve put an example below of how you could structure your day departing from Üsküdar*. Like Eminönü, I would suggest double-checking the ferry schedule for any updated times before you go (link here).

  • Departure Time Üsküdar: 11:35am
  • Arrival Time Anadolu Kavağı: 1:15pm
  • STOP OVER Time: 2 hours 45 minutes
  • Departure Time Anadolu Kavağı: 4:00pm
  • Arrival Time Üsküdar: 5:40pm

Cost for return trip – ₺139.82* (approximately €2.71 per person). This price is for everyone – locals and foreigners.

As you can see, this is significantly cheaper than the Bosphorus Long Tour that departs from Eminönü. If you’re staying on the European side of Istanbul, you can get the local ferry from Eminönü to Üsküdar for ₺53.20* (approximately €1). The ferry from Eminönü to Üsküdar departs every 20 minutes, and the trip takes approximately 20-25 minutes.

If you’re on a budget, I would highly recommend finding your way over to Üsküdar and departing from there.

How to Pay for the Ferry

When visiting Istanbul, I recommend getting an IstanbulKart card. This card can be used on all public transport in Istanbul, including the ferries, metro trains, trams, and buses. You can get an IstanbulKart card from the ticket machines at the metro stations, ferry terminals, tram stops, and major bus terminals. Once you have your Istanbulkart card, you can upload funds onto it using either using eftpos or cash. The ticket machines have multiple language options, so you can choose your preferred language to follow the instructions.

I believe Istanbul is slowly bringing in the option to pay for public transport using your bank card or phone (e.g., Apple Pay). However, I’m not sure how far this has progressed. For the time being, I think it’s easier to get yourself an IstanbulKart card and use it for all transport options.

You can use your IstanbulKart Card for the ferry trip to Anadolu Kavağı. However, if you’re choosing the Long Bosphorus Tour option from Eminönü, it might be easier to buy a separate ticket at the ferry terminal. This saves you from having to upload so much money on your IstanbulKart Card.

Summary

Hopefully, you found this post informative, and it has inspired you to visit Anadolu Kavağı. This is easily one of the best day trips from Istanbul, and one that is sure to be memorable. Honestly, Anadolu Kavağı still feels like a hidden gem, so take this as your sign to check it out!
